Special Session 6

Special Session 6: Underwater Technologies and Marine IoT

Description: This Special Session focuses on emerging technologies, systems, and applications for underwater and marine environments. The session aims to bring together researchers, engineers, and practitioners working across underwater communication, instrumentation, sensing, monitoring, intelligent systems, and the Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT)/Marine IoT. Its scope covers optical, acoustic, radio-frequency, electromagnetic, and hybrid underwater communication approaches, together with channel characterization, signal processing, sensor networks, data acquisition, localization, navigation, autonomous platforms, and smart marine monitoring. The session also welcomes work on AI-enabled marine systems, energy-efficient technologies, underwater imaging and inspection, and applications in aquaculture, offshore and subsea operations, ocean observation, and environmental monitoring. Particular interest is given to experimental platforms, prototypes, testbeds, field trials, and real-world deployments that demonstrate practical advances in underwater and marine technologies. By adopting a broad interdisciplinary scope, the session seeks to encourage knowledge exchange among the communications, electronics, instrumentation, sensing, robotics, and marine-technology communities and to promote innovative solutions for future connected and intelligent underwater environments.

Universiti Malaysia Terengganu

Dr. Wan Hafiza Wan Hassan is a Senior Lecturer at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Malaysia. She holds a B.Eng. in Electronics, an M.Sc. in Communication and Network, and a Ph.D. in Wireless Communication. Her research expertise includes wireless and underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC), underwater channel characterization, visible-light communication, IoT, and marine communication and sensing technologies.
She has led funded research on turbulence and salinity effects in underwater optical channels and contributed to collaborative projects involving laser-based underwater visible-light communication, millimetre-wave radar, and network deployment modelling. Her current research focuses on environmental effects on underwater optical links and hybrid RF–optical communication for subsea instrumentation and marine monitoring. She is also actively involved in research consultation, technical review, and international research collaboration in communications and marine technologies.
Her research achievements include the Best Paper Award at ICMIC 2024 and the IEEE Malaysia Section Final Year Project Competition 2022 award in the Underwater Technology and Oceanic Engineering track. Research projects under her supervision in UOWC also received Best Final Year Project awards at the faculty level for three consecutive years (2022–2024).
